On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Poland activated its air defenses — alongside NATO systems — to intercept drones that entered its airspace during a Russian strike against western Ukraine. It marked the first time Warsaw has directly engaged in the conflict, calling the incident an “act of aggression”.
Polish military command reported detecting more than 10 objects, with those deemed threatening “neutralized.” Several drones were shot down, and recovery operations for debris remain underway. Authorities advised residents in regions such as Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin to remain indoors.
The escalation also disrupted civil aviation, as major airports — including Warsaw Chopin — were temporarily closed. Flights were rerouted to cities such as Katowice, Wroclaw, and Poznan.
Internationally, U.S. lawmakers described the violation as an “act of war,” warning it could be a test of NATO’s resolve. In Warsaw, President Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting with ministers and increased direct coordination with NATO leadership.
