NEWS: Brazil’s Supreme Court Secures Majority to Convict Jair Bolsonaro for Criminal Organization in Coup Plot

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) has reached a majority in its First Panel to convict former President Jair Messias Bolsonaro for criminal organization in the case investigating an attempted coup d’état following the 2022 elections.

Justice Cármen Lúcia cast the decisive vote, aligning with rapporteur Alexandre de Moraes and Justice Flávio Dino, confirming that evidence shows Bolsonaro led a group involving government officials, military officers, and intelligence agents in a structured plan to undermine democratic institutions and prevent the legitimate transfer of power.

So far, the partial tally stands at 3 votes in favor of conviction and 1 for acquittal (Justice Luiz Fux). The final vote will come from Justice Cristiano Zanin, but regardless of his position, Bolsonaro’s conviction for this crime is already secured.

The defendants — Bolsonaro and seven others described as the “central core” of the plot — face five charges brought by Brazil’s Prosecutor-General’s Office: attempted coup d’état, attempted violent abolition of the democratic state, armed criminal organization, aggravated damage, and deterioration of protected heritage.

Final sentencing has not yet been determined and is expected once the trial concludes later this week.
